CCC # 7: Counting Sheep

Hi, friends. Thanks for stopping by for the 7th edition of CAROLE'S CREATIVE COMMOTION! (Forgive me - I like seeing my name in all caps. Even if I'm the one doing the typing.) Last month, I shared with you that there are certain images I prefer to avoid, most notably: elephants. I thought I'd balance the scale this month and tell you about a certain species of image that I LOVE and scoop up whenever I can: SHEEP.

Yep, I've got a thing for those fluffy little flockers. And, just as I can pinpoint the source of my distaste for the elephant, I know where my love of sheep images originated. Take a look...

Aaah... Princess Diana in her sheep sweater! Princess Diana first wore this sweater to a Polo Match in 1983, when I was 12 years old, and from that moment on, I have been positively smitten. Of course, this is back in the day when there weren't a million celebrities, and you couldn't Google their name if you wanted to see a photo of them or know what they were up to. You were at the mercy of the magazines, and in Diana's case, photo books. One day, my mom brought me home a book called "Princess Diana, Lady of Fashion."
(See? I can even Google an image of the cover of that book!) I swear, I thumbed through that book thousands of times. Believe it or not, I still have it somewhere around here. Guess what my favorite picture in the book was? You got it: Diana in that red wool sweater, woven with dozens of white lambs, and one black sheep.

Several years ago, I found a tiny sheep stamp and created an homage to Diana for an ATC swap I was in. I've recreated that sweater in paper and ink at least 10 times since then. And here's my latest version, using YNS's Cute Sheep stamp:
Diana would be 50 years old had she not been killed in that fatal car accident in Paris, in 1997. I can still remember exactly where I was (in my bedroom, in the house we lived in before our current home) and what I was doing (rocking Truman, then 11 months old, and trying to get him to fall asleep) when Sean came in the room and told me that Princess Diana had died. Now, I'm six years older than Diana ever got be. My son, Truman is now 15 - the same age Prince William was when his mother died.

In my own small way, I honor the memory of the Princess, who captured world's imagination with her style and beauty, every time I make one of my sheep cards. As I do so, for a few minutes, I turn back into that 'tween-aged girl, laying on my twin-sized bed with the rainbow sheets, leafing through that book, and imagining Diana had a life as perfect as it looked in the pictures.

So, tell me: what images do you collect? Are there any themes you're drawn to, again and again? Tell me about them, and on Saturday, February 25th, Karen will randomly select one lucky commenter to win Cute Sheep.

See you next month, on the 18th.

xo - Carole

PS - I used the February Sketch For You To Try as the blueprint for my card. YNS is sponsoring the SFYTT this month, and Karen is generously giving the following discount to everyone who participates.

It's YNS Fun Friday With a SUSIE Q-TIP!

Karen here...I'd like to take a moment to welcome Susan Liles to the YNS DT!!! WOOT! WOOT! She is a fabulous designer and wonderful person so I am delighted to let you know that Susan will be bringing you a very special YNS FUN Friday every month!!! YAY!!! She's got some amazing tips for you today and then after you have enjoyed all your Susie Q Awesomeness I have some fun DT cards to share with you!!!

Cheers to another amazing YNS FUN Friday!!!

Well, it's me, Susan from Apparently, everyone loves my SUSIE Q-TIPS over on my blog (I know because I get emails from ya'll if I don't post one every time; ya'll think I have a fever or not feeling well or something!). So Karen has invited me to share and expand on some of them once a month over here on the YNS blog. YAY!

Today is my first post--ya'll can tell I was a teensy bit excited about this because I took lots of pictures. I hope ya'll like visuals! Don't get used to it, though, I may not be as zealous next time! When I made this card, it was just me, Zina, some scissors and my camera having a love affair with a little glue and we got carried away. It's the month of love so it was allowed.

Ok, so I love to actually cut out my images once they are stamped and colored in order to be able to put them against fun backgrounds. I've learned a few things along the way in regards to doing this, some I don't want to talk about, but here are a few pointers I've gleaned that actually make it a little less tedious. Raise your hand if you have any questions along the way (or just leave a comment and I'll get back with ya).

1. First off, I think it looks better to cut the image out, leaving a little white border around all the edges (no need to highlight around your image with pencils or markers when doing this either). This also helps hide mistakes where you may accidentally cut into the line too much. It's forgiving and helps make the image pop. Double duty. Happy.

2. I guess I should back up a little bit. You need a GOOD pair of sharp detail scissors like Cutter Bees (about $10). I like them because they cut all the way to the TIPPY TIP TIP! When cutting around curves, you'll have more control if you keep your scissors still (except for the cutting motion) and move your image where you want the blades to go.

3. When you're cutting it out, if the excess gets in the way, cut it off! Who'da thunk? Like here, I started to go around the rest of her face, but the part I had already cut off was getting in the way and making me bend my image. No bendy on the images! It's outta there.

4. Ok, this one is probably the most important to me. When getting into tight corners, cut into them from different angles all the way to the tip of your scissors, making each cut end just short of the image line. Doing this as opposed to getting your scissors in that little crevice and turning them to go the other direction, will make that spot nice and neat and deliver a crisp edge. Otherwise, the scissors will "chew" up that edge and be messy. Here's a look at the difference it can make:

It takes no extra time to cut it like the example on the left as I mentioned above. You'll be glad you did it. Trust me.

5. When you employ tip #4, you'll sometimes have a little "hang-osis". This is the technical term for where you've cut into the corner from both angles like good girls and boys, but the piece you're cutting off is still trying to hang on. Make sure you don't just need to cut it a little further to get your cuts to meet up closer to the corner. If they are super close and you don't want to get too scissor happy that you might make a mistake and cut too far into your white margin, pull that piece to the BACK of your image and either snip it off from the back, or gently pull it off (or both). Doing this keeps that corner clean if you have to pull it off a bit.

6. Lastly, if there are any sharp corners, I snip them off as well if I can get to them without bending the piece. Be careful and just snip the tiniest bit off to keep that white margin uniform.

Ok, that's about all I've got for today! Thanks for letting me share. That Zina is so photogenic, isn't she?!

Thank you Susan!!! Your card is adorable and your Susie Q Tip is awesome!!!!

Kerri Michaud
Designer & Assistant DT Coordinator
Hello! My name is Kerri Michaud and I’m a stay at home mom to 3 kiddos ages 7, 5, and 2! We currently live in Apopka, Florida which is just outside of Orlando. I got into stamping about 2 years ago after I had my first Stampin’ Up party. I was instantly hooked LOL! Before then I had dabbled in scrapbooking, crocheting, sewing, quilting, jewelry making, and whatever other crafty whims that came my way. I think I have found my true passion in stamping and card making though! I also LOVE to make altered items and little gift boxes, etc. I am soooo excited and honored to be part of the Senior DT for Your Next Stamp! I ADORE these darling images and just love working with Karen and the rest of the DT!

Hi my name is Peggy Toole and I am a stay at home mom to 3 great boys who are 11, 12 and 15 and have a wonderful husband who is very understanding about my stamping obsession! We live in the Shuswap, part of the Northern Okanagan in beautiful British Columbia. I have been stamping seriously now for about 3 years and love this hobby and all the wonderful people I've been lucky enough to meet so far! I am thrilled to be part of the Your Next Stamp design team and to be working with such talented women.

Hi everybody! My name is Maureen and I live in sunny Hawaii with my husband, 2 boys and 3 dogs. When I'm not paper crafting, you can find me reading, watching TV, or playing on the computer. I'm so excited to be designing for Your Next Stamp and I hope I can inspire you at least a little with what I create!

Angel Rivera

Angel Rivera
Designer
My name is Angel and I’ve been stamping for over 8 years! I also scrapbook from time to time, but prefer making cards or other little projects. I try to escape to my craft room as often as my 3 boys (ages 16, 12 and 10) and all of their extra activities allow! My husband of 19 years, Derek, is supportive of my crafty time because he knows it makes me happy. I also work full time with a wealth management company and am a licensed life and health insurance agent. I’m so excited to be working with Karen and ALL of the YNS crew!

Bonnie Kohane

Bonnie Kohane
Designer
I am a second generation SAHM, which i call SAHGM. ("G" for grandma). I have been watching my grandkids for 7 yrs. I am also going through a second generation of crafting, i have a scrapbook that is almost 60yrs old filled with all of my favorite memories. I've been featured in Stamper's Sampler..more of an artsy card magazine...but my style tends to be "cute". Card crafting isn't the only thing i like to do, if i am not working on cards, you'd see me working at my sewing machine, crocheting or trying any new craft technique out there.. i love a challenge..which brings me to say..i can't wait to see what you all create for the YNS challenges!

Brianna Loeffelbein

Brianna Loeffelbein
Designer
Hello my name is Brianna also know as Happy Scrapper in the crafting world. I am 26 years old, I am married to a wonderful supportive husband of four years and we have an amazing two year old son Jayden. We live in a small northen town called Brainerd which is located in the state of Minnesota. For the past 7 years, I have been working for our Local UPS Store as store manager and I just love it. When I am not working I am spending time with my family and friends and of course crafting! I have been passionate about crafting my entire life. My main love of course, is Paper Crafting, specifically card making. I also like to sew, bead and crochet and teach others how to show thier creative sides. I am so honored and privileged to be joining such and awesome group of ladies here at YNS, I can’t wait to get started and share all my creations with you!!

Deborah Anton

Deborah Anton
Designer
My name is Deborah Anton and I am a stay at home mom to 11 year old twin boys and a wife of 12 years to a patient, loving, and awesome Army Officer. I am originally from California but currently live in Tennessee. I keep pretty busy just on the home-front with my active boys playing different sports, moving every few years, and volunteering with the Army. But in the little "me" time I do get, I love to do anything crafty and hide in my craft room!! I started out 11 years ago designing and creating jewelry for 2 large retailers, which led me to having my own business; until 8 years ago when I met designer paper and glue. A new love relation began! I am so excited to be part of the YNS team and work alongside so many talented ladies!

Jen Roach

Jen Roach
Designer
My name is Jennifer and I live in Ontario, Canada with my husband and 3 year old daughter. I'm a scientist by day and a paper crafter by night ---or really just about any free time I have including my lunch breaks at work!!

I started out in paper crafting back in about 2002 when my Mom and I took a scrapbooking class together. A few years later I decided to give card making a try and it's been my passion ever since. I'm the world's slowest scrapbooker so the instant gratification of card making really won me over. Over the years I have used more and more stamping in my designs and I love learning and trying new techniques and styles.

I would probably define myself as a "scrappy stamper". I *LOVE* patterned paper and most of my cards have lots of it with added layered on embellishments and textures. My cards may not be easy to mail but boy are they pretty!!

Other than crafting, I love to play tennis as you can probably tell from my blog address:

Julie Elak

Julie Elak
Designer
Hi, I am Julie Elak, aka "The Last Minute Crafter". My days are kept busy working full time and running after my children. I use almost every free minute to craft, my purse is typically full of copics and a pari of scissors. I began stamping well over 10 years ago, but my love for paper crafting found renewed energy once I discovered the online community in 2009. I started a blog on a whim and am so happy I did. I have made many friendships and found so much support and encouragement on-line.

Laura Nehring

Laura Nehring
Designer
My name is Laura, and I am SO excited and honored to be joining the Your Next Stamp Team! I am a former preschool/kindergarten teacher, now stay at home mom to 3 energetic kiddos - 5 year old twin girls, and a 4 year old boy. I met my husband the year I graduated from highschool, and we've been together ever since. We are enjoying life in sunny southern California, where we were both born and raised.

I started scrapbooking in 2006 when I was pregnant with my girls, which led me to stamping and cardmaking a few years later. The point of no return was when I purchased my first Copic marker at a local scrapbook expo 2 years ago... now I'm hooked! I LOVE to color, and it's how I unwind at the end of a busy day! My card making style is fairly clean and simple... I like for the images to be the focus of my creations, so I don't do a lot of embellishing. In addition to Copics, I am also completely obsessed with Kraft Cardstock, and polka dots! I am really looking forward to being a part the YNS team!

Nicole Nastali

Nicole Nastali
Designer
Hi! I’m a former kindergarten teacher who is now a stay at home mom to my 2 little girls. My hubby is supportive of all my crafty pursuits and that says a lot about him because I love all kinds of crafts from making headbands, bows, & designing dresses to making party favors and now cards!! I am a newcomer on the stamping scene and have met so many wonderful crafting friends already thanks to the common joy of card making and coloring with Copic markers. I would color all day long if my family would let me…!! Lol! My favorite colors are the blue greens (affectionately called the BG’s) and I try to sneak them into every card I make!! I love to get crafty with my girls (ages 8 & 6) and let them color images right along side me. It’s a fun hobby for us all to share!! A sleepover stamp from YNS was one of my very first stamp purchases & I’ve been in love with Fhiona & friends ever since!! I’m thrilled to be joining the YNS Team with this group of fabulously talented ladies & I can’t wait to share my cards with you!!

Ruza Rebel

Ruza Rebel
Designer
I'm a former Administrative Assistant turned stay-at-home mom to a very special young lady. I've been crafting since I was a young child, and when I became a SAHM I turned to crafting to stay busy. Staying busy making cards, altering items, and just having fun with paper is an amazing hobby that I truly fell in love with. I'm very grateful that I have a husband that supports me, that my son loves seeing my creations as well, and my special young lady enjoys getting into my crafts. I truly love the challenge of making something beautiful with the various products available to the crafting industry. That is why I am super excited to share my projects featuring the amazing YNS Digital Stamps, and I look forward to seeing your creations as well!

Sheila Veitch

Sheila Veitch
Designer
I was borne and grew up in a small town Canada. I started paper crafting in the fall of 2007, when I saw a stamping catalogue one of my friends had laying around her home. I took one look through the catalogue and was so excited because I knew I had found my favorite hobby at last! Making Cards. I’m a natural born artist, I completed a graphic arts program in college and worked as an artist for several years a life time ago. I currently work as an office administrator in Toronto where I live with my dog Georgie. Though I absolutely love my job, this hobby is my creative outlet. I believe, the cards I make are like little works of art, expressed from the heart. I find that when I’m making a card for a specific person, I am thinking about that person through the whole process. And that in itself can be the gift.

Thanh Vo

Thanh Vo
Designer
Hello there! I’m Thanh (pronounced “tan”). I live in the Metro Vancouver area of Canada in a suburban apartment. I'm so excited to be joining the YNS Design Team! I was the July 2012 Guest Designer and have fallen hard for the the images since. I work full-time during the day and can be found in my little craftin' haven at night either sipping a cup of tea or a yummy martini! I'm a Design member for other fabulous companies as well, if you would like to learn more about me, please visit my blog. Take care and I look forward to creating with you!
